“This doesn't really affect anyone who isn't interested: There's no performance or functional impact on existing set-ups. In practice any benefits from using multicast udp over any other method of data distribution will be so small as to be unnoticeable on the average boat network. There's also very little out there which supports it right now, although this has to date been a vicious circle. Hopefully this is a step to breaking that and I've mailed a few vendors to ask about adding support.

“If you know of any products which work with nmea-0183 over multicast udp do please post. If anyone (other than me could test that this works for them (on mac especially) that would be great.

“Note obviously that if you fancy doing multicast but you still need broadcast to support some applications, forget the multicast: you'll pointlessly double the data on your network.”
